William Tarn & Co. was a large department store in the Elephant and Castle district of Southwark. The business begun as a drapery shop c. 1799. In 1841, William Tarn & Co.

By the 1870s, the company had expanded to become a huge department store. There were departments for silks, velvet’s, furniture, haberdashery, millinery, boots and shoes, furs, carpets, and suits. The store was the largest retailer in Elephant and Castle – a thriving shopping area at this time – known as “the Piccadilly of south London”.

A selection of private commissions

A beautiful example of boulder Opal from Lisa Marie's private collection

If you were part of society, you may have had a townhouse and a country residence.

It was normal practice to have a removable safe inside a decorated stand. At the end of the season you would have taken your valuable case out and taken it to your country residence where you may have a more basic stand to put the box in or indeed just kept the case separately. The cabinet would have various sized cupboards and secret compartments for your various valuables whether it was jewellery or important papers.

One of James’ valued customers had had the inner part of the stand but the decorative section had become separated over time and asked James to make the rest. As you can see the main body has barley twist legs and is made from  Walnut and Oster cut Yew. Then James has had to make the piece look over three hundred years old. The only way to make the timber shrink and move and colour down to match the original is by chemical colouring. This can only be done once and if you fail, it’s back to square one!
